Great, large, big; all pervading, all-embracing; numerous [lang id =1028]多; surpassing ; mysterious [lang id =1028]妙; beyond comprehension [lang id =1028]不可思議; omnipresent [lang id =1028]體無不在. The elements, or essential things, i.e. (a) [lang id =1028]三大 The three all-pervasive qualities of the [lang id =1028]真如 q.v. : its [lang id =1028]體, [lang id =1028]相 , [lang id =1028]用 substance, form, and functions, v. [lang id =1028]起信論 . (b) [lang id =1028]四大 The four tanmātra or elements, earth, water, fire, air (or wind) of the [lang id =1028]倶舍論. (c)[lang id =1028]五大 The five, i.e. the last four and space [lang id =1028]空, v. [lang id =1028]大日經. (d) [lang id =1028]六大 The six elements, earth, water, fire, wind, space (or ether), mind [lang id =1028]識. Hīnayāna, emphasizing impersonality [lang id =1028]人空, considers these six as the elements of all sentient beings; Mahāyāna, emphasizing the unreality of all things [lang id =1028]法空, counts them as elements, but fluid in a flowing stream of life, with mind [lang id =1028]識 dominant; the esoteric sect emphasizing nonproduction, or non-creation, regards them as universal and as the Absolute in differentiation. (e) [lang id =1028]七大 The [lang id =1028]楞嚴經 adds [lang id =1028]見 perception, to the six above named to cover the perceptions of the six organs [lang id =1028]根.* * *大即常體得名, 常遍為義。 謂曠兼無際, 體不變易, 豎窮三際, 橫亘十方也。 (三際者, 即過去、 現在、 未來三世也。 )* * *梵語摩訶, 華譯為大, 是自體寬廣、 周遍包含、 多、 勝、 妙、 不可思議等的意思。
